With a few innovative features, Soldier of Fortune was one of the first games to handle a multitude of damage effects, spreading injury across twenty-six zones on the human body. This style of game, a first-person shooter, is a venerable classic, arming you with insane amounts of firepower and pitting you against all number of enemies. Soldier of Fortune: Gold Edition is the resurrection of an old favorite of mine from the PC world. The time taken to start levels can be a bit slow, but this isn't really a problem - we're just used to being spoilt by other games. There's a plethora of other tweaks too, from simple bug fixes to gameplay niceties that just add to the fun. The experience is further improved by the addition of six new player skins and even the presently unfashionable single-player mode is treated to enhanced bot Al, which makes crippling the enemy before killing them even more satisfying. These can also be played in the already familiar DM styles too, adding a lot more variety to the game.

The bulk of the update is taken up by no less than 18 new multiplayer maps, which cover the two new Deathmatch modes - Control and Conquer The Bunker. It's not that you have to be a twisted sicko to like this game, but it certainly helps. It hasn't quite dragged the gore levels up to those of an abattoir, but no doubt hundreds of inbred gung-ho firearm maniacs in the US will be inspired by it before they nip out for a spot of animal molesting. The team has been beavering away and has come up with a worthwhile update. Ravensoft has now unveiled the Gold Edition patch, and for UK fans of the game who won't be treated to the special boxed edition it's a must. We gave it a very respectable 80 per cent and then hurried down to church to pray it hadn't tainted our mortal souls. It was all good unwholesome fun, and not surprisingly many FPS fans lapped it up.
The sequel, Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix maintains the high quality on display here and is also highly recommended.What they came up with, however, wasn't particularly true to life in terms of looks - the venerable Quake 2 engine just isn't that good - but it was teeth-clenchingly gruesome in the way that limbs separated from bodies, blood splattered in all directions and the wounded moaned in agony as their lives seeped away before our eyes. The tight controls, clever level design and thrilling gameplay all combine to create a classic shooter.
Both music and effects are excellent and add much to the atmosphere, making a great game even better. The visuals on display here are still impressive enough, with realistic modelling and detailed, varied environments, but it is the sound which really stands out here. In shooters, weapons are always a high priority for most gamers, and Soldier of Fortune offers a nice range, with the microwave pulse gun and slug thrower sitting comfortably alongside classics like the shotgun, and most of which prove highly satisfying to use. Although most people will tackle the game as a full-on shooter, it is possible to take a stealthier approach, which adds some depth and extra challenge to the game. Missions take Mullins all over the world, from New York to Siberia, Iraq, Uganda and Germany, and all of them feature several unique, creative twists which really help to maintain player interest and keep the excitement high. The complex plot revolves around a Neo-Nazi terrorist plot to steal nuclear weapons, with the player taking the part of John Mullins, the titular Soldier of Fortune, as he seeks to prevent this dastardly plan. However, this is a shame as it is actually a clever and inventive game which is backed up by a gripping storyline. Definitely not one for the kids, this is a controversial shooter that is perhaps best known for its graphic representation of violence.
